We started telling people about the blog today, and so far the response has been awesome. I think support from our internet friends will go a long way towards keeping us motivated. It's hard to quit when you've got a bunch of awesome people cheering you on.
I'm hoping my ability to fall asleep at a moment's notice will work for me in this experiment. I can see plenty of ways it will work against me (yes, I did fall asleep at The Flying Saucer). But, it seems a lot of people who start this experiment have trouble falling asleep for their first few naps. I'm hoping my quasi-narcoleptic nature will just make it easier for me to transition into these short bursts of sleep.
Right now, giving up caffeine is giving me the most trouble. I'm not getting headaches or cravings, I'm just tired and missing my normal pick me up. I may start drinking decaf coffee to see if it gives me a placebo effect. Does a placebo effect work if it's self-induced? Hm.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who has seen or blog so far and been supportive. You don't know how much that's going to mean in the days to come. Please keep it up.
In closing (I hate saying, "In closing"), I want to do something really awesome with our extra time at night. Any ideas? I wouldn't be opposed to taking especially epic suggestions.
Today I slept in through three different alarms. That is one of my worries about this whole sleep thing — that we will both sleep through our wakeup alarm after one of our naps. Blake's one of those people who will fall asleep in the middle of a conversation. If I recall correctly, I think I remember him once falling asleep at the Flying Saucer while we were out drinking.
One of the things about sleeping polyphasically is that you have to keep a strict schedule. The fewer naps you take, the stricter you have to be able taking your naps on time. If you move around your naps too freely, it will screw up the whole schedule and you will be exhausted. (I'm glad we didn't start this before DST.)
I'm looking forward to this strict schedule. Hopefully I'll be able to add some more schedule to my life. We're doing 4 naps, at 12am, 6am, 12pm, and 6pm. I'm planning on eating a small to medium meal shortly after each nap; maybe it will help me eat a little more healthily.
We are actually planning on cooking our sig figs (that's what I like to call "significant others", because the phrase always reminded me of significant figures from science) breakfast after our 6am nap. The more we tell people that, the more we have to stay true to it.
Speaking of, both of them are being awesome and supportive about this experiment. I'm hoping that the lack of sleep won't make Blake and I moody enough to change their minds about all this. It's nice to have a couple people around to make sure we just don't go crazy during this.
